The legal first step for every new rider. Off-road basics in the morning, a supervised road ride in the afternoon, and a DL196 certificate valid for two years.

The UK licence path

From L‑plates to any bike

Most riders follow the same ladder. Where you start depends on your age — the quiz can work it out for you.

CBT

Compulsory Basic Training

From 16 (moped) or 17 (125cc). Ride on L‑plates for two years.

A1

A1 licence · 17+

Up to 125cc and 11kW. No L‑plates, passengers allowed.

A2

A2 licence · 19+

Bikes up to 35kW. The most popular next step for under‑24s.

A

Full A licence · 24+

Any bike. Or 21+ after two years on A2 (progressive access).
