What happens on a CBT
CBT isn't a test, it's training. Your instructor moves on to the next element when you're ready.
- A
Introduction & eyesight check
Meet your instructor, check your licence and read a number plate from 20 metres.
- B
Practical on-site training
Get to know the bike: controls, stands, checks and wheeling it around.
- C
Practical on-site riding
Pull away, brake, turn, figure‑of‑eights and emergency stops in a safe area.
- D
Road-riding briefing
Highway Code, being seen, road positioning and riding in different conditions.
- E
On-road riding (2+ hours)
Ride on real roads with radio guidance from your instructor, then collect your certificate.
Plans change. Here's how it works.

Frequently asked questions
Can't find what you need? Email us and we'll get back to you.
Email info@cbtgo.co.ukWhat is a CBT and do I need one?
Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is the course you must complete before riding a moped or motorcycle on UK roads. It isn't a test you pass or fail, but your instructor must be happy you're safe before issuing your DL196 certificate.
What happens on the day of a CBT?
There are five elements: an introduction and eyesight check, practical on-site training, on-site riding, a road-riding briefing and at least two hours of on-road riding. Most riders finish in a single day.
Do I need my own bike or kit?
You don't need your own bike. Your training school's joining instructions explain what they provide on the day and what to bring. Wear sturdy boots, jeans or motorcycle trousers (no shorts, leggings or thin joggers) and warm, waterproof layers.
What do I need to bring?
Your provisional driving licence (photocard) and, if you need them, glasses or contact lenses for the eyesight check. For a full licence course, bring your theory test pass certificate too.
How long does a CBT certificate last?
Two years. If you haven't passed your full licence test by then, you'll need to take CBT again to keep riding on L‑plates. Book it here as a normal CBT, same price.
Which licence can I go for at my age?
At 17–18 you can take A1 (up to 125cc). At 19+ you can take A2 (up to 35kW). At 24+ you can go straight for a full A licence (Direct Access), or at 21+ after two years on A2.
Can I cancel or change my booking?
Changes, cancellations and refunds of the course fee follow your training school's own published terms; we send you the school's details and help arrange any change. CBTgo's booking fee is included in your price and is non‑refundable once your booking is confirmed, unless the school cancels. Full details are in our Rider Terms & Conditions.
What if the school cancels?
If your school cancels or can't run your course (for example for unsafe weather), we'll offer you another date or partner school, or a full refund of everything you paid.
Where does CBTgo operate?
We're live in London & Sussex, with training at MTS Sussex in Crawley and East Grinstead; 1 Stop Instruction in Tottenham, Barnet, Beckton and Ilford. Enter your postcode and we match you with the nearest site that has space. More of the South East will follow as schools join.
How do I contact CBTgo?
Email info@cbtgo.co.uk with your booking reference. On the day of your training, contact your school directly.
